Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry's Butt Pear Perry is a single-varietal perry mae with Butt pears. Don't let the fruit's name fool you, this is extremely tasty!
Butt is a wonderful perry pear variety which ripens late in the season. Hard as a rock until just when it ripens, this vintage is actually a blend of Butt pears grown on two separate farms: Broome Farm in Herefordshire, from Ross-on-Wye's own orchards in England's West Country; and Carswell Farm, much further Southwest. The dual sourcing of fruit adds complexity to the single variety - showcasing the full range of Butt's characteristics of light acidity, a floral and elderflowery nose, with a gripping tannic finish. A magical, ancient pear to be treasured.
Tasting Notes: This perry drinks dry to slightly off-dry. High tannins, which are masked briefly by the sweetness and freshness of the pear, but come on quickly and linger long through the perry’s finish. Medium-to-plus acidity. Floral nose with slight smokiness. Flavor notes of fresh pear, honeysuckle, grassy, melon, and loads of bright citrus pith (lemon). A grippy tannic finish.
If you love tannins, you'll love this perry. Pair this perry with some cheese or any other rich or fatty food and witness the miracle that is food & cider parings. The little bit of fat in the mouth before you take another sip will soften the tannic expression significantly and open up a bright citrus lead fruitiness that will taste like an entirely different drink.

About Ross-on-Wye Cider & Perry: named after the small town in Herefordshire in which they're located, Ross-on-Wye has been growing apples & pears since their family moved to their farm in 1930. The county of Herefordshire is located about 3 hours west of London, is one of the most rural areas of the UK, and is home to most of the cider & perry fruit grown in England. The Johnson family makes a range of single-variety cider & perry products each year as well as several fine blends, mostly with fruit grown on one if their own orchards. The cidermaking process is pure and simple, using only whole juice, and allowing natural fermentation. A trip to their pub & cider barn at the Yew Tree Inn should be near the top of any cider enthusiast's bucket list, where one can taste from more than 60 small batch cider offerings between their single-varietals, blends, and multiple vintages of cider & perry.
