This 6-bottle bundle of ciders is a delicious way to explore and celebrate American Cider's history, and makes for a fun gift! Cider lovers quickly become apple enthusiasts, and the more you learn about apple varieties the easier time you'll have finding ciders you're sure to love. There are an unknown number of apple varieties, and there are widely varying opinions on which varieties are best for cider making. Many cider lovers firmly believe that a quality cider requires balance only achieved by blending different apple varieties. These six single-varietal ciders challenge that theory in the most stubbornly American way!
Cider / Apple Varieties included in this bundle*:Ā
-
Virginia Hewes Crab - Albemarle's Virginia Hewes (750 mL): Virginia's Albemarle Ciderworks champions for traditional American cider apple varieties in most all of their releases. This delightful single-varietal cider is made from an American heirloom crabapple variety local to their area and favored widely by many.Ā Ā
- Harrison - Snow Capped's Harrison (750Ā mL): During the 18th and 19th centuries, the Harrison apple was the most popular and famed apple variety in the U.S. - grown almost exclusively for use in cider. At one point after Prohibition it was widely considered lost or extinct, only to be discovered again in New Jersey. Snow Capped's single-varietal Harrison is one of our favorites.Ā
- Newtown Pippin - Haykin's Newtown Pippin (375 mL): The Newtown Pippin apple is one of America's oldest apples and is known for being one of Thomas Jefferson's favorites - including for cider making. Originally from the Newtown village on Long Island, the apple is full flavored and mouth watering. It evokes lime zest, green apple, the lemon and tea of an Arnold Palmer, a touch of honey, and some soft minerality. Few cidermakers do single-varietal ciders as elegantly as Haykin.Ā
- Golden Russet - Union Hill's Golden Russet (500 mL): Named for it's most notable features - it's golden color and potato-like russeted skin, the Golden Russet is a favorite of ours for it's delightful, tropical flavor profile in ciders. Discovered in New York, the Golden Russet is a seedling of a russeted English apple cultivar.Ā
- Airlie Red (aka Mountain Rose) - Peak Light's Airlie Red (750 mL): the Airlie Red - aka the Mountain Rose or the Hidden Rose - is a red-fleshed apple with a yellow skin but a deep, red color throughout it's inside. Originally found growing near the village of Airlie in Oregon, this apple has become highly sought after by cider makers in the Pacific Northwest and beyond.Ā
- McIntosh - Liberty Ciderworks McIntosh (500 mL): The McIntosh apple is so beloved in the U.S. it's easy to forget that it was originally found in Ontario, Canada where it was grown by John McIntosh.Ā
