No Control's Angel Cider is a natural cider co-fermented with blackberries. Made from fruit grown in the 2021 harvest season, fermented together naturally using spontaneous fermentation. Fruit grown organically, hand harvested, and fermented without any additives or without any filtration. A zero-zero, natural cider / fruit wine.
This is a fun one. Tart and juicy, with acidity and a fruitiness unlike most French ciders. The blackberries give it a subtle blush on top of the rich color of the tannic cider apples. Mild blackberry notes and tartness in front of pallet, acidity rushes nicely through the pallet and keeps the cider tasting very fresh. Late in the flavor ride is a familiar French apple profile with added acidity. Dry finish of apple skin and light berry notes with nice tannins that slowly fade.
We've yet to pop a bottle of this ourselves, but suspect it's unlike most ciders found in France. Likely dry, fun, and funky, with characteristics of the fruit partying together. We'll update the notes once we've tasted it ourselves, but it sounded fun enough to order!
About No Control: Vincent Marie loves powerful rock music. Take that as a clue, both to the unbridled energy of his wines and to the rock music-inspired names on the labels. It was in 2003 that Vincent first tried natural wines without additives and realized that this was exactly what he wanted to do.
His domain, No Control, covers five hectares in the Puy-de-Dôme – a peculiar landscape created by volcanic activity. It is also the common thread in the wines' flavors: the deeper minerality that occurs in volcanic soils such as basalt.
In the vineyards, Vincent has been working with organic and biodynamic methods since 2013. He finds great joy in working the land with the help of a horse, but avoids anything that makes the soil more compact. Instead, he encourages a rich vegetation that can return organic matter to the soil.
All fruit on the domaine is harvested by hand in small troughs that hold eighteen kilos of fruit. Spontaneous fermentation that lasts for different lengths of time for the different wines & ciders – from approximately twelve days to three weeks.
No additives whatsoever are used in the winemaking. No wines are clarified or filtered, and no sulfur is added before bottling. Vincent himself says that his goal is to make clean, healthy, generous wines with intense taste potential and a strong expression of the place where they grow.
